FERPA

Welcome to the University of the Southwest FERPA Tutorial.

Nationally, there is growing concern from incoming and continuing students about the privacy of their personal information. Students are keenly aware of the data collection and information exchange that occurs at institutions of higher learning. Transmission of personal data to vast numbers of recipients can occur easily and be produced on both printed and electronic media.

The federal government understands the need of students to have some control over the disclosure of information from their education record.  Under the Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA), students may limit disclosures, except in situations where release is required under the law.

The University of the Southwest considers the security and privacy of student records an important priority.  The purpose of this information is to increase the awareness of FERPA requirements to protect University data.
