Malcolm Gladwell is the author of five New York Times bestsellers — The Tipping Point, Blink, Outliers, What the Dog Saw, and David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits and the Art of Battling Giants. He has been named one of the 100 most influential people by TIME magazine and one of the Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers.

He has been a staff writer for The New Yorker since 1996. He has won a national magazine award and been honored by the American Psychological Society and the American Sociological Society. Gladwell was previously a reporter for The Washington Post.

Focusing on leadership and innovation, Gladwell is widely regarded as an extraordinary speaker; “on target”, “funny” with an “unsurpassed ability” to challenge his audience through the context of their own lives and experiences and those of our greater society. Gladwell draws upon the themes in his books accessing sociology, psychology, history, science and politics to leverage his unconventional ideas.

Malcolm Gladwell has explored how ideas spread epidemically in The Tipping Point, decision making in Blink, and the roots of success in Outliers. In David and Goliath, he examines our understanding of the advantages of disadvantages, arguing that we have underestimated the value of adversity and over-estimated the value of privilege.

Gladwell says, “The far more useful question, I believe, is not what successful people are like, but rather where they are from.”  Malcolm Gladwell will explore this and other provocative and inspiring ideas in his speech at 7:00pm on Tuesday, April 18th at R.N. Tydings Auditorium in Hobbs.

Since its inception in 1989, the Jack Maddox Distinguished Lecture Series has been hosted by University of the Southwest.  The purpose of the series is to contribute to the quality of life in Lea County, New Mexico and the surrounding area by providing nationally recognized speakers for intellectual stimulation and entertainment.
